The
Crucial Early Years
In July 2000, the RAND Education Foundation, a leading global education
research organisation, released results of a scientific study conducted on
about 10,000 children over a period of 15 years.
The study concluded that:
-
The
formative years of a child are the most critical to his development, since
as much as half of the child's intelligence is developed
between the ages of zero and
five.
During this critical stage, a child's overall development is
heavily dependent on early experiences, since young children are most open
to learning and enriching influences.
There is a strong relation between the level of children's
development and the quality of early education they receive.
-
Positive
interactions between caregivers and children, in settings where there are
low child-to-adult ratios, support happier and more engaged children.
-
Children
who attend high-quality child-care settings display better cognitive,
language, and social skills both on standardized tests and according to
parents, teachers, and observers.
-
Children
who have received a better early education go on to be more productive
adults with increased independence, social confidence and higher chances
of success at all stages in life.
Our
Teaching Philosophy
Unlike
other early education centers in the region, Jumeirah
International Nursery offers the research based Early Years and
Foundation Stage of National Curriculum (UK) as the basis of it teaching methods.
At the foundation stage children retain more when they're having fun.
Whilst our programs emphasize learning through
play, they are
flexible enough to allow for individual growth, and structured enough to
promote cognitive skills and self-discipline. Our flexible
year-around approach to
learning, accommodates for different rates at which children develop.
Each
weekly program unit is built around a theme and presents daily activities to
introduce or to reinforce at least ten developmental skills that lay the
foundation for future academics. Some
activities will be structured so that your child explores and
experiments through their play, initiating their own learning. Other
activities may involve individual quality learning with a member of
staff or teacher. In this way, every day is filled with a healthy mix of
learning and fun play, and our caregivers help
child develop his unique qualities to his fullest potential.
The
Early Years and Foundation Stage of National Curriculum (UK) ensures that each age group participates in daily activities stimulate six
key developmental domains.
Knowledge & Understanding of the self and the World
Mathematics & Cognition
Personal, Emotional and Social Development
Communication, Language and Literacy
Physical Activity
Creative & Artistic
Experience
Knowledge
and understanding of the world - We present many opportunities to
children to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and
question a variety of contexts. It is thrilling to watch the wonder
of children discovering themselves and the world.
Health
- As children learn about their bodies and themselves, we encourage them
to assume responsibility for hand washing, toileting, and playground
safety.
Mathematics -
Our
mathematical programs, provide an introduction to basic mathematical
concepts such as numbers, patterns, shapes, measuring, volume, capacity
and time. Through through innovative practical exercises, group discussion and
colourful posters.
Cognition
- Children need concrete experiences. Tasks and materials are
selected to encourage conceptual development by "learning by doing"
with interactions that
develop problem-solving skills.
Personal
and Social skills
- Jumeirah International Nursery provides children with the environment to build self-esteem,
self-control and self-awareness. Throughout their day they are given many
opportunities to meet with success.
Emotional
support - Our caregivers truly love children. Each child is provided
with affection and support from warm and caring adults. We also encourage
autonomy in each child and cooperation within the classrooms.
Communication,
Language & Literacy
- Our reading rich curriculum provides our children an introduction to reading through the discussion of books
and characters. There are a number of stages to follow each with its
own set of key words to learn. Eventually children will learn to build
their own sentences form these words. Our Curriculum uses games, story
tapes and computer software to aid learning. We also have
a well stocked library of books that the children can borrow as
part of a book-sharing scheme.
We also offer the "Phonics" program which has proven wonderfully
effective in teaching children to read - and to love reading,
which is the number one predictor of success
in school. "Hooked on Phonics" is an optional
program which supplements our reading-enriched curricula,
providing special, more individualized
instruction. Not only will your child's reading skills improve, but
they just may come away with a love for reading
that will last a lifetime.
Physical
activity - Our program ensures that children
are encouraged to move indoors and outdoors on our challenging playscapes
which help them understand how their bodies work, and what they need to do
to be safe and healthy. Daily program plans also
engage children in periods of active and quiet play.
Creative and
Artistic Experience - Creative expression is achieved through art,
design, technology, music, movement and dance. Easel painting and listening to children's classics
quickly become among the favorite activities. Imaginative role playing
kindles their creative juices.
Communication
- guaranteed
Jumeirah International Nursery ensures that
each child's
progress is monitored and communicated regularly. Each child's progression in the six
key areas of development are recorded in an Observation Folder which you
will have continuous access to at any time. The folder facilitates discussions with
the teacher on any concerns and your child's development during teacher
parent conferences. Thrice a year a year we issue a summative report of your child's progress.
The
Observation folder will be presented to you when your child leaves
school, and can be passed
on to the destination primary school.
Moving
on up
Our school
has rooms dedicated to different age groups. During your
child's first educational journey within the school she will gradually progress through
these different rooms. The timing of these moves will depend upon your
child's individual needs and their stage of development.
Special
Care & Gentle Discipline
Depending
on your childcare needs, your child may spend a significant amount of
time in our care. Having placed your trust in us, we take our responsibility
very seriously, and
realise make every effort to provide more than just the essentials to
you and your child.
Jumeirah International Nursery's policy is never to embarrass or ridicule a child
when he misbehaves. Teaching disciplined self-control is just a normal part of
growing up. We do not allow the use of corporal or physical punishment.
Instead, we use positive behavioral influences that strengthen self-esteem and
confidence. Many a time difficult situations are handled by redirecting the child to
another, more appropriate activity.
