Let's Make Music!
Musical instruments are fun and easy to make. Add a special cassette recording of your child singing a song and you've got a great gift from your child that any family member or special friend will cherish for years.

What you'll need:

bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Recyclables, like toilet paper and paper towel cardboard tubes, margarine tubs, yogurt containers with lids and paper plates

bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Hole punch

What to do:

bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Invite your child to make a musical instrument. An older preschooler may jump right into a project and discover her own way of using the materials while a younger child may need a little prompting.
bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Try to give your child freedom to use the materials her way as much as possible.
bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Shaker – Cover one end of a cardboard tube with construction paper, taping the paper to the sides of the tube. Add some rice or dried pasta. Seal the other end. Decorate with paper, stickers, markers or crayons.
bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Drum – Make a drum from any container that has a lid, such as a margarine or yogurt container. To decorate, cover with contact paper, construction paper or stickers.
bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Tambourine – String yarn through the holes in the pasta. Punch holes along the edge of a paper plate and string the yarn with the pasta through the holes.
bd14868_3.gif (419 bytes) Enjoy the instruments by playing along with a favorite cassette or the radio.
